Metta Meditation is sometimes referred to as the Lovingkindness meditation, it’s a practice that many come back to for its simplicity and ability to change how we see ourselves and others. Let’s practice this meditation together this week. Who’s up for the challenge to set aside 10 minutes a day to do this? I’ve added a short outline below if you’re new to it. Please comment if you’re practicing this with us. We would love to know how you find it, or if you already practice it let us know your experience. Start by closing your eyes and sitting quietly. Take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that in order to practice Lovingkindness to others we must first start with ourselves. Offer yourself these words: May I be happy May I be healthy May I be safe May I live in peace. Then choose someone who means a lot to you. Hold that person in your minds eye as you offer these words: May you be happy May you be healthy May you be safe May you live in peace. Next bring to mind someone who’s more of a casual acquaintance. Maybe someone you see at the grocery store, a neighbor etc and offer these words: May you be happy May you be healthy May you be safe May you live in peace. Next bring to mind someone who you don’t care for (this is the hard one!). Sometimes it helps to remember that they have the same wishes for love that you do, or maybe you try to picture them as a child as you offer these words: May you be happy May you be healthy May you be safe May you live in peace. Finally, bring to mind your community, the wider community, expand out to include all people everywhere, all living beings and yourself. Offer these words: May we be happy May we be healthy May we be safe May we live in peace.
